Y9 STEM Centre - Middlesbrough College

14 of our Year 9 students on a visit to Middlesbrough College's STEM Centre.

The day was held in liaison with Northern Skills - the North East's largest apprenticeship provider and My Kinda Future whose aim it is to raise the profile of STEM based careers whilst reiterating employability skills.

The students were engaged throughout the day particular in their own production lines making 'twirly birds'. The students were resilient, enthusiastic and demonstrated self control to ensure their production process improved with each round. They were aware that order, team work and determination were required to be the most productive team.

A tour of the centre followed after lunch and we were all amazed with the provision offered; it was particularly pleasing that several of our students (both male and female) displayed an interest in the subject areas and possible future in engineering.

Our aim is always to promote aspiration and ambition - yesterday prompted the students to think about the many opportunities available to them in sectors they may not have previously thought about. It isn't all scientists and mathematicians, we realised! One of our students with a passion for science and English realised the two can be merged into a career as a science journalist!
