40 Days and 40 Items

Lent is normally a time for giving up something like sweets or chocolate, but the Unity City Academy SEND department decided this year they would do something that little bit different. Inspired by a post on social media from the Salvation Army, which asked people to donate forty items into a black sack to donate to charity at the end of the period, Mrs Booker decided to take this on and asked the SEND department to help donate an item to a good cause.

Located in the SEND Office was a box which soon began to overflow with various items of clothing, food, books, shoes, toothbrushes and a range of gifts to be donated to a much needed place in our local area. The Salvation Army tailors their services to the needs of their local community and by providing food, clothing and other items from our department it meant that people in need could have a ‘hand up, not a hand out’.

After working closely with Val and Des Brown from the Middlesbrough Salvation Army, it was an absolute pleasure to welcome them to our academy for them to receive the boxes and bags of items that we had collected. Even though the period of Lent hadn’t officially ended, we wanted to donate the items to them before our term ended so that those in need could receive our donations during the Easter period. It was lovely to meet Val and Des in their Salvation Army uniform and see how ecstatic and grateful they were to receive our items and visit our Academy, whilst meeting the staff from the SEND department.

The Salvation Army offers a lunch club, drop in sessions, coffee mornings and much more, and were delighted to hear about our Super Citizen Day on the 5th April and learn about the work that our students were completing in order to work with local charities.

We would like to say thank you to Mrs Booker for organising the ‘Forty Days, Forty Items’, and a massive congratulations to the SEND department who donated over 150 items. Well done!
